Beauty: The Crown Act

California is set to be the first state to outlaw policies that punish black employees and students for their hairstyles with the Crown Act.

The Crown Act, which was passed in April, has been cultivated to create a respectful, open workspace for natural hair and comes after Chastity Jones claimed to have lost her job due to pressure to change her hair, according to the LA Times.

The bill, if it passes legislation, will legally protect people in the workplace and public school K-12 students who wear Afros, braids, twists, cornrows or dreadlocks, by prohibiting the enforcement of grooming policies that disproportionately effect black people.
